ICT Procurement – Have Your Say

Australian Federal Government Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy
application to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) goods

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has recently launched details of its Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy. The policy is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of Australian Government procurements and supporting the transition to a circular economy. Work has now commenced on expanding this policy to cover the procurement of ICT goods. It is intended that the policy will apply from 1 July 2025 to ICT hardware purchases of over $1million.

The proposed policy and framework will consider:

  • product scope
  • sustainability focus areas such as climate impact, environment and circularity
  • environmental principles
  • evidence requirements and how claims are measured and substantiated – including what metrics to be report on via Supplier Environmental Sustainability Plan (SESP).
  • level of import and weighting that should be attached to sustainability criteria
  • how to encourage and demonstrate innovation
  • tendering and procurement process, including requirements to be fulfilled by suppliers

Here is your opportunity to have your say on the above and provide input into what you see as good, better, and best practice for sustainable ICT. The federal government is keen to hear your views so don’t miss this unique opportunity to shape the policy.
